At the time of writing this, I have not had the pleasure of seeing Civil Union live. One fact, I hope to change in the very near future. Seasick, Lovedrunk is a swampy, insane dirge of a record. The album is scary as hell. And I love it.
Released through Christchurch boutique label Melted Ice Cream, Civil Union's debut feels lived in, considered, and perhaps most of all, conveys a refreshing lack of pretension that usually comes with a bands first release. A common mainstay of the Whammy/K'rd gig scene, Civil Union toured extensively in the US off the back of an EP released in 2013.
Lead single, My Father Below, seems to encapsulate the albums feeling well. Angular guitars give way to an interesting vocal dynamic between guitarist Anthony, and drummer Alessandra. The track is heavy as hell, and highlights the clever use of dynamic & production techniques Civil Union have employed to create a doomy, hooky, excellent debut.
Have a listen to My Father Below, here.
